Polytape

Polytape

The visible one.

Three-quarters of an inch of flat ribbon in the two colors animals actually see. Nothing else in the category is as easy to spot from across a field, which is why it's where most farms start.

Right for you if…

Not this one if

The line runs along a ridge or across open wind. A ribbon has real sail area, and wind loads your posts and fatigues the tape. Buy rope for exposed ground.

  • Visibility is the thing you're buying — horses, goats, or any fence people walk past.
  • The paddock is sheltered enough that wind isn't the defining feature of the site.
  • You want the most fence for the money without giving up tinned copper.

Polytape questions

How long does polytape last?
Plan on three to ten years. The UV package in the plastic, the wind exposure of the site, the conductor metal and how you tension and store it decide where in that band you land.
How do I join two sections of tape?
With buckle-style tape connectors, full width. Tying a knot joins plastic, not conductors, and it creases the ribbon into a fatigue line. One long-time customer wrote a review specifically to clear this up for other buyers.
How many strands do goats need?
Four to five on a perimeter, spaced tight at the bottom, because the gap a goat finds is always low. Two on an interior line inside a perimeter you trust. Aim for 4,000–5,000 V at the far corner, which is usually a grounding job.
Will tape work as a deer fence?
Yes, and it's the format we'd pick for one. A deer learns the fence with its nose and then avoids it by sight, so dusk visibility is the whole feature. Bait the wire with peanut butter and give the herd a week or two.

Good fences let you sleep.
